London Top 25 Restaurants: August 2016

The dining scene in London is an eclectic mix, as evidenced by this month’s top three restaurants on the London Top 25 list compiled based on social data from Foodable Labs.

The top three restaurants in the London Top 25 welcomes two brand-newcomers to the list: Kitchen Table at No. 1 and Antidote Wine Bar at No. 3. Fitting nicely in between them at No. 2 is Benares, moving up from No. 3.

The dining experience at Kitchen Table is intimate and interactive. In a small (19 seat) area that encourages full interaction with the chefs, the experience can be described as “kitchen theatre,” where guests can see Head Chef James Knappett’s prepare his locally sourced, foraged menu changes daily. Knappett’s team walks diners through a 10 to 15 course tasting menu, featuring contemporary European techniques and a focus on British ingredients and flavours.

Michelin-starred Benares is where Chef Atul Kochhar takes inspiration from his native India to serve modern Indian cuisine using regional British ingredients.

Signature main dishes include mung bean and lentil tikki chaat with spiced quinoa, avocado and coriniander; masala squid with mango and ginger dressing; and bhatti spiced lamb pasanda. Be sure to save room for stem ginger and gooseberry cheesecake, gulab jamun crème brulee, or cardamom and coffee pannacotta with white chocolate sorbet for dessert.

Antidote Wine Bar’s extensive wine list is made up mainly of biodynamic and organic French wines from small growers. Antidote attributes much of the success of its food to “great sourcing.” The restaurant offers a menu that changes daily based on the freshest available local ingredients. Headed by Chef William Dee, Antidote’s a la carte menu features dishes like English cucumber with green almonds, and nigella seeds; pork terrine; mackerel with kohlrabi and wild fennel; Devon crab; and Yorkshire lamb with violet artichoke.

Notably, moving up 16 spots to No. 5 is Blacklock, well-known for its mouthwatering meats – everything from beef (porterhouse, sirloin, ribs, and even a 35-day aged hanger steak sandwich with hot bone marrow) to lamb (cutlet, T-bone, and neck) to pork (loin, rib, belly, and, of course, chops).

Boston Top 25 Restaurants: June 2016

Get your silverware ready, Boston. The June 2016 Top 25 is bringing you the best of the best, newcomers, and some old favorites. The top three for this month seem to be sitting on a merry-go-round, circling and taking turns as they rotate through the rankings. This time, however, it was Puritan & Company that won with a score of 180.23. Loyal Nine came in a hairbreadth away at No.2 with a score of 179.34, followed by Giulia with a score of 178.68 at No. 3.

Congratulations to Highball Lounge, a retro bar with upscale eats and vintage games, for debuting into the Boston Top 25. This restaurant sits at No.24 with a score of 168.67.

We also have to give a big hand to Alden & Harlow. While they may have landed at No. 5, it's quite impressive that this subterranean, New American restaurant jumped 11 spots from its former No. 16 placement. Speaking of a major comeback, let's welcome back a few restaurants who've finally returned to the Top 25 after being away since December 2015: No. 21 Erblauce, No. 22 Row 34, and No.23 The Gallows. And a special shoutout to jmCurley at No. 25 for making it back onto the rankings after last appearing in September 2015. Will this brand continue to move up?

Detroit Top 25 Restaurants: May 2016

Not a lot has changed with the top three restaurants in the May 2016 Detroit Top 25, as revealed by the social consumer data by Foodable Labs. The tops are still the same, but have switched positions (Roast moves from first to second; Wright & Co. moves from second to third; and Selden Standard moves from third to first).

While little has changed in the top three, there are some newcomers to the list: Antietam, Parks & Rec Diner, Rock City Eatery and Cafe D'Mongo's Speakeasy.

In addition to the weekend tasting and brunch menus, Antietam’s dinner menu features such favorites as parsnip apple bisque, oxtail terrine, veal osso bucco, and rack of lamb.

Parks & Rec Diner, on the other hand, presents a more laid back dining experience in a cozy, sit-down diner, which features new twists on standard breakfast favorites. They keep it local with food from suppliers like Keep Growing Detroit, Recovery Park Farms, LaBrosse Farms, Grown in Detroit, Zingermans Bakery, and Rhulig Farm.

Rock City Eatery, touting “food, booze, pie,” prides itself on an ever-changing and locally sourced menu. On it, you might find everything from spicy Brussels sprouts and poutine to Korean bowls and Spanish octopus to lamb cheeseburgers.

At the other end of the spectrum, Café D’Mongo is described as an “eclectic hipster watering hole with quirky decor featuring classic drinks and live music.” The establishment’s Facebook page warns: “We're a cast of characters you won't want to miss!” Besides the cocktails and atmosphere, the food is an array of unique choices like the chickpea fritter, soy BLT, egg and eggplant plate, and barbecue seitan.

Portland Top 25 Restaurants: May 2016

One thing remains constant on the Portland food scene: the food. It’s phenomenal. And the greatness isn’t limited to a certain stable of establishments, as demonstrated by this month’s Top 25 PDX Restaurants.

In fact, there are three newcomers to the Top 10 alone — Maurice, Langbaan, and Pok Pok.

Portland is known for exotic Thai flavors and Langbaan and Pok Pok are putting Portland on the map.

And, bringing French influences to the table, Maurice is a “modern luncheonette,” serving a variety of pastries, Nordic-French fare, coffee, and even cocktails.

Also new to the Top 25 are Bamboo Sushi NW, which claims to be the world’s first certified sustainable sushi restaurant; Olympia Provisions SE, which has evolved from its days as the city’s first salumeria to being renowned for fine European-style dishes; Clyde Common, a European-style tavern; and Nostrana’s regional Italian fare.

But don’t worry; the list hasn’t changed that much. Some old favorites are still among the Top 5 like pizza fave Apizza Scholls, Taylor Railworks’ American cuisine, and Ataula, featuring a modern Spanish ‘tapeo’ culture.

San Francisco Top 25 Restaurants: May 2016

This month’s Top 25 San Francisco Restaurants list is filled with familiar names and four brand new ones!

The top 25 veteran, State Bird Provisions takes the coveted No.1 spot this May. This urban-rustic restaurant managed by the husband-and-wife team, Stuart Brioza and Nicole Krasinski, features a bold menu of American small plates served dim-sum style.

Rich Table, a restaurant known for its Californian fare with a local ingredient-focused menu has not appeared on the top 25 since last year, but the restaurant makes a strong comeback at No. 2. Rounding out the top three is a newbie restaurant that made its debut at No. 17 on the last SF top 25 ranking, Ninebark. Ninebark is another restaurant creating some social buzz with its Californian cooking in the Bay.

It isn’t easy for newer restaurants to knock out the established veterans on the list, but four restaurants make their debut on the SF Top 25.

Foodable welcomes The Progress at No. 9, which is by the same team from State Bird Provisions serving family-style meals. The former pop-up concept now turned permanent, Lazy Bear lands at No. 17. The Greek eatery Souvla makes its debut at No. 20 and the contemporary pâtisserie Craftsman and Wolves is 23rd.
