The power of social media and a brand's ability to use it is steadily becoming a driving force in industry success. The Millennials, who are now at the cusp of starting their own families and furthering in their careers, will soon dominate the consumer audience, and companies who want a smooth ride in the future should focus on connecting to this generation's desire for a tech-savvy dining experience.

According to Goldman Sachs, Shake Shack is similar to Chipotle in its strong social-media presence, and as a result has a 1,808 followers per system sales. McDonald's, a household name and fast food tycoon in the last handful of decades, has an underwhelming 11 followers per system sales. Granted, McDonald's as a whole had more followers as of last month at 491,000, while Shake Shack only had 155,000, but despite Shake Shack being significantly smaller -- only 63 locations in comparison to McDonald's 36,000 --, this fast casual brand is more successful on Instagram.
