The face of the craft beer scene seems to be the disgruntled but passionate hipster, with an equally trendy and stylistic space, but the ROAK Brewing Co. in Royal Oak boldly brings a new look to Michigan's craft beer scene. A label marked by flames and a taproom guarded by fiery Doberman pinschers hanging on black, medieval banners are a far cry from tweed and plaid.

ROAK Brewing Co. opened earlier in June, and like the sixth month of the year, offers six kinds of beers, including Belgian white ale, a strong dark ale, several India pale ales and more.

Head brewer Brandon MacClaren, who has brewed at Founders and New Holland breweries, aims to make his beers more drinkable and palatable for a wide audience. And the appeal is spreading, because bottles and kegs are shipped to 300 retailers across Detroit, as well as Washtenaw and Livingston counties.

"We didn't expect our bottles to sell the way they are," co-president and owner John Leone said. The team is already looking into buying more efficient bottling equipment. Read More
