Austin hosted the first annual Soul Summit: A Conversation about Race, Identity, Power, and Food, gathering African-American chefs, scholars and other culinary professionals together for a celebration of the community's vibrant food culture. Founded by nutritionist Toni Tipton-Martin, the event was designed to highlight the "freedom to pursue economic opportunities in the food industry" for those in the African-American community as well as honor those who have helped to pave the way for the next generation of African-American food professionals.
Taking place at a number of locations throughout East Austin, the Soul Summit concluded with an award ceremony that honored the Williams family, who operate Lucille's Restaurant in Houston, with the "Keepers of the Flame" award. The Williams' great-grandmother Lucille Bishop Smith, whom the restaurant is named for, was a pioneering figure in Texas' culinary history. Read More.
