From gourmet and wood-fired to your favorite local neighborhood joint, pizza is a culinary staple that will always be relevant. Whether you prefer thick or thin crust, Chicago or New York style, there’s always room for a good pizza debate; it’s all subjective. But one thing is for sure: Pizza continues to trend. And it’s evolving with the times with lighter, healthier options, fresh ingredients, and even gluten-free varieties. To top it off, pizza has the potential to become the next 'Chipotle' of fast casual darlings. (See also: Is Fast Casual Pizza the Next 'Chipotle'?)
But which pizza players are leading the category?
Foodable Labs’ newest report, Top Social Pizza Concepts Q2 2015, compiles the top social pizza brands using a few different combinations: overall pizza brands (all segments), fast casual pizza brands, overall most loved, most loved fast casual, and top mobile pizza brands.
How It Works
The pizza report was compiled from pulling unstructured data from DigitalCoCo’s proprietary Restaurant Social Media Index (RSMI). The RSMI currently tracks more than 15K restaurant brands and more than 127M U.S. social consumers across 17 social media platforms. Additionally, the Index tracks more than 188K industry terms in over 430K locations. None of the data used below or in any Foodable Labs materials is hand-selected or manipulated in any way. 3. Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza | Social Score: 355.06
Founded by Anthony Bruno (with former Miami Dolphins player Dan Marino as a partner), Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza can only be found on the east coast, but continues to expand. Earlier this year, USA Today called it the best pizza in America for its food, ambiance and success. It was also named the No. 1 pizza restaurant in America by Zagat. Cooked in 800-degree ovens, the coal-fired pizza takes only four minutes to cook, a good selling point for speed of service. But as a full-service, sit-down restaurant, there’s no rush to get out the door. Anthony’s uses high-quality ingredients and the menu includes traditional pies, specialty pies, salads, sandwiches, Italian Soul Food, and dessert. Specialty pies include Philly Cheesesteak topped with caramelized onions, and Roasted Cauliflower Pizza topped with breadcrumbs. In addition to the food, Anthony’s has a Give Back program, where select locations will give 20% of each check to charity.
2. Mellow Mushroom | Social Score: 360.79
If pizza chains were a clique, Mellow Mushroom would be the free-spirited hippie of the group. The brand’s persona is artsy, creative and friendly, and it’s evident — from the menu to the decor. Mellow Mushroom takes pride in its high-quality ingredients and sustainable practices (all pizza boxes are made from 100% recycled material). Menu items differ by location, but to give you a taste of Mellow’s funky delicious pie selection, there’s Thai Dye (olive oil and garlic base with all-natural curry chicken, mozzarella, Roma tomatoes, onions, topped with fresh basil, cucumbers and a swirl of Thai chili sauce), the Red Skin Potato Pie (olive oil and garlic base with sliced roasted red potatoes, Applewood smoked bacon, caramelized onions, cheddar and mozzarella cheese, garnished with chives and drizzled with sour cream and spicy ranch dressing), and more. And, of course, more traditional pies exist, too. Are we making you hungry yet? The MM menu also includes hoagies, calzones, salads and “munchies” (like muffuletta cheese bread and stuffed portobello mushroom). Oh, and then there’s catering and a bar with a selection of handcrafted cocktails and craft beers. Mellow Mushroom was created in the ’70s and continues to keep truckin’ with utmost authenticity (as only a hippie pal would).
