Austin welcomed its first True Food Kitchen location, the health conscious restaurant created by acclaimed health expert Dr. Andrew Weil and restaurateur Sam Fox. Opening in an old power plant in the Seaholm District, True Food Kitchen looks to offer diners a new take on healthy dining. Rather than offering traditional tofu-based, or an entirely vegetable driven menu, the restaurant focuses on anti-inflammatory ingredients known for their ability to help prevent the onset of cancer and Alzheimer's.

Austin Food Trucks Struggle To Pass Health Inspections

A recent report undertaken by Austin/Travis Co. Health and Human Services shows that nearly 20 percent of Austin's food trucks are currently struggling to pass local health inspections. One of the most common problems these food trucks are facing is not keeping food at the correct (and safe) temperature or do not offer employees a place to wash their hands. Additionally, many of these trucks are operating without correct permits.

While only ten years ago, Austin had merely one health inspector required to monitor the city's mobile restaurants, today there are six that undertake regular inspections on the various food trucks currently operating out of the city.

While Austin has always had a world renowned culinary scene, over the last decade the city has welcomed a growing number of chefs and restaurateurs who have worked to bring Austin in competition with some of the best food towns in the nation. Local born Larry McGuire is one such restaurateur helping to transform the city's food scene. Behind respected restaurants such as Perla's and Jeffrey's, McGuire oversees six incredibly distinct restaurant concepts in the city.

“When I was growing up, Austin was a medium-sized college town,” McGuire explained to the Wall Street Journal. “But now it’s maturing into something more real. The city is changing so fast.”

And McGuire is greatly to thank. The sushi and kaiseki concept promises to offer local Austin diners a number of unique, chef-driven Japanese dishes offered as part of a multi-course omakase menu that can be paired with a variety of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverage pairings.
