Mixology as an Art at Oak Tavern

What are consumers looking for now when it comes to their bar experiences? Do they want a variety of beverages to choose from? A swanky atmosphere? Some small plates to pair their drinks with? Most likely, it is all of the above. If a consumer wanted a good beer- they would go to a liquor store and pick up their to-go favorite brew or find something new. Consumers go to a bar for the experience, the atmosphere, the expertise from a bartender, the food offerings and to be waited on.

And who says that pubs can’t be modern? Especially, nowadays with the influx of upscale and elevated bar concepts that are still approachable and not stuffy. Restaurants across the nation are adopting this design. They are creating spaces that are relaxed and comfortable, yet are still modern and chic. And even though the environment appears to be more relaxed, the menu is still sophisticated. It is certainly not easy to find that balance.

Michael's Genuine Food & Drink is not the only restaurant and bar that is in Miami’s design district that is receiving praise from diners, especially from locals.The nearby sleek restaurant and bar, Oak Tavern, that serves new American cuisine has also been well-received . The space offers an industrial ambiance with warm wood tones, yet it is contemporary. This classy tavern offers a menu of small plates, such as the Octopus A La Plancha paired with a smoked potato salad and the Rabbit Sausage with gnocchi, truffle, and tallegio. Some of the large plates include the Whole Wood Grilled Bronzino with toasted farro & provençal vegetables in pistou sauce and the Mushroom Crusted NY Strip Steak with truffle butter, smashed creamers, and grilled leek.

This sophisticated menu has an extensive bar menu to match featuring cocktails, such as the Death Door Bramble with Death’s Door Vodka or Gin, lemon juice, muddled black and blueberries, and St. Germaine and the Tavern Paloma with Omeca Altis Tequila, rosemary infused honey, fresh grapefruit, and aperol. The bar program also features bottled beers and draught brews, including selections from the local Wynwood Brewery. For the wine connoisseur, there is plenty to pick from with a large list of red and wine wines.

Oak Tavern stays true to the creative scenery of Miami's design district with dishes and cocktails which are artistically created. “I always start with the spirit, that goes back to me being an art historian, to a music lover, and a book lover,” said Megan Bardoe, a kick-ass bartender at Oak Tavern. Cocktails are so much more than a beverage, they can be an inventive masterpiece.

The Millennials Invade the Miami Culinary Scene

A recent study by the City Observatory, has shown that the millennial population in the South Florida area has leaped nearly 25% within the last decade. Specifically in downtown Miami, there was a 118% percent increase of this demographic, which is why the brew scene and fast casuals are rapidly expanding in downtown Miami.

How Michael's Genuine and Pubbelly Paved the Way

Miami has some of the lowest social scores from data pull from the RSMI. However, two restaurants that are Foodable Top 25 Miami veterans, Pubbelly and Michael's Genuine (this month's no. 7) both are restaurants that Miami residents and visitors can't get enough of. Both of these restaurants feature a gastropub atmosphere, without the greasy bar food. Is the relaxed gastrobar experience a reason for their success? More South Florida restaurants are revamping their decor to mimic American Gastropubs.

The fine-dining chef, Albert Cabrera, decided to open Bread + Butter. This Coral Gables restaurant offers traditional Cuban dishes, but in an American style gastropub. The Spanish eatery, Bulla Gastrobar offers a fine dining experience, but in a fun, energetic and more laid back atmosphere. Have consumers had enough with stuffy fine-dining atmospheres?
