Johnny Rockets Opens a More Casual Concept in NYC for on-the-go Consumers

The diner restaurant brand, Johnny Rockets is testing a new type of format in New York City. Last week, the chain opened a new store near Madison Square Garden and Penn Station. 

This store is open early to cater to those NYC diners looking for a quick breakfast on the way to work and for those burning the midnight oil, looking for a quick bite, the restaurant is open late. 

The restaurant chain is showcasing its new revamped image. This Manhattan store features a brand new modern design, the new Johnny Rockets' logo and restaurant team uniform.

"New York is an important market for Johnny Rockets. Our goal is to expand in the New York area in the very near future," said John Maguire, Johnny Rockets CEO and president in a press release. "Our new restaurant at One Penn Plaza is an ideal location in the heart of a busy shopping, entertainment and transportation hub. We hope to find more locations that have similar characteristics. The better-burger category has become extremely competitive in New York City and around the country. Johnny Rockets was serving fresh, never frozen, 100% beef burgers made-to-order, long before many other burger restaurants came on the scene. Our loyal fans know this about Johnny Rockets and now we are winning over a new generation of fans with our newly designed restaurants."

Johnny Rockets is celebrating its 30th anniversary with this revamped store. In order to serve guests quicker, the restaurant has incorporated new kitchen technology that will prepare meals faster, while keeping the quality high. 

Grab N' Go menu items will be also available all day for those guests on-the-go.

The grand opening event last week incorporated the local community where the store held an after school event for NYC's Boys & Girls Club, where the brand donated $5,000 to the organization and gave middle school students the opportunity to cook and learn about the back-of-the-house operations of the restaurant. 

Then the official grand opening for the public was held the following day, where there were giveaways and food samplings.

Chef Ilan Hall Brings NYC Israeli Barbecue With Esh


Top Chef Season 2 winner, Chef Ilan Hall, admits that he lost focus when it came to his restaurant The Gorbals, at which he was well-known for putting his own take on dishes like matzo balls wrapped in bacon.

Luckily, the part Scottish, part Jewish chef, whose heritage was well-represented on The Gorbals menu, has gotten his focus back and is setting his sights on a new concept.

The new New York City restaurant Esh — which means “fire” in Hebrew — takes its inspiration from the Israeli side of The Gorbals menu.

“A lot of the new dishes…have a lot of flavor profiles from Israel. They remind me of times of when I went to Israel when I was younger,” Hall told Foodable video correspondent Agnes Chung in this “On Foodable Side Dish.”

So, what exactly is Israeli barbecue? I can tell you what Hall’s version definitely isn’t: traditional.

“We’re not doing traditional barbecue on the Israeli side, we’re not doing traditional barbecue on the American side,” Hall explained. “We’re trying to take the best of both worlds and make it into something that’s delicious.”
