Will Startup Hungry Planet™ Gain Momentum After Recent Success in a California School District?

A California school district began to offer plant-based meals across all their cafeterias this past academic year and had students choose whether or not they wanted to eat them based on taste. “The initiative was so successful, the meals will likely be offered again next year,” reports KEYT.

We’ve heard about companies like Impossible Food and Beyond Meat making their way in restaurants, but the Santa Barbara Unified School District actually sourced her plant-based protein from a startup based out of Missouri. It’s called Hungry Planet™.

According to the company’s website, it focuses on creating an alternative protein to ground beef, chicken, pork, Italian sausage, chorizo sausage, and crab for culinary professionals to use as a 1:1 substitution in innovative entrees. The company says it develops its faux meats to delight the demanding tastes of meat lovers in the heart of the Midwest.

At No. 1 we have newcomer Simon and the Whale, a beautiful neighborhood restaurant that draws its culinary inspiration from the American coasts. Nestled into the Freehand New York, the restaurant got its name from Owner Gabriel Stulman who was inspired by the whale-patterned gifts his son, Simon, had been receiving. Chef Matt Griffin created an American menu for the concept with several raw seafood starters, simple options like a fish sandwich with coleslaw, and more demanding dishes like the roast guinea hen. If you’re trying to kill two birds with one stone, Stulman also runs Studio upstairs at the Freehand, the No. 6 ranked restaurant on our list.

Dominique Crenn Develops New Restaurant and Bar Focused on Wine

Late next month, Dominique Crenn will be opening her third restaurant, Bar Crenn, directly next to her first. Two-Michelin-star Atelier Crenn has long been known for its avant-garde cuisine inspired by traditional French fare.

Bar Crenn will offer a contrast to the new age restaurant with more casual bites. Though she says, she will be heading in the direction of classic French—specifically, dishes she grew up with as a child in Brittany. In an Instagram post earlier this month, Crenn announced that chefs like Alain Ducasse, Guy Savoy, and other three-Michelin-starred chefs will be contributing recipes to the menu of shareable plates next to a number of original recipes from the restaurant. Plates to be expected include tarte flambee, pomme soufflée, and Petit Crenn’s own omelette à l’oursin,

The wine list at Bar Crenn is expected to be the greatest differentiator of Bar Crenn with Matt Montrose, wine director of Atelier Crenn, putting together a wine list that skews French and European. There will be low-ABV cocktails as well, which Crenn says will be a nod to French aperitifs.

Barr Crenn will share a courtyard with Atelier Crenn. The design is described as homey and warm.

“This is more than a wine bar, it’s my living room,” says Crenn. “It’s elegant and it’s warm and thoughtful. We want people to experience the best hospitality there, too.”

The new space will also serve as a starting place and end point for Atelier Crenn diners, where they can begin their meal with an aperitif, and finish with dessert and coffee. For those interested in a more casual environment, Crenn says the full tasting menu from Atelier Crenn will be available to a limited number of diners each night.

The long-awaited spin-off will open February 20th.

Gordon Ramsay's New Restaurant Booked 12,000 Reservations in 10 Days

Celebrity Chef Gordon Ramsay’s highly anticipated reality show-themed restaurant, Hell’s Kitchen, will have its grand opening January 16th, but it has already received 12,000 reservations.

“It is unprecedented,” Ramsay told the "Los Angeles Times." “We’ve never seen this kind of demand.”

The restaurant is designed to look exactly like the set of the chef’s hit reality television series of the same name, “Hell’s Kitchen.” The 300-seat restaurant opened quietly in early January, or at least that was Ramsay’s plan. The prime location and appearances by the celebrity chef made it impossible to be kept a secret.

On the show, Ramsay has gained fame for his fiery, hypercritical character.

Cooks in the 8,000 square-foot Las Vegas restaurant are dressed in uniforms coinciding with either the red or blue team, a reference to the show, and work in a “high action” open space designed to showcase the “sounds of a noisy kitchen,” "Eater" reported.

“It’s like walking onto the ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ set in L.A.,” Ramsay said. “The producers had input with the contractors, and the designers had input with the contractors.”

The restaurant is only allowing walk-ins until January 16, when bookings officially open.
