Pebble Beach Food and Wine Celebrates Women Chefs at 'Beauties and Their Beasts' Dinner

Pebble Beach Food and Wine Celebrates Women Chefs at 'Beauties and Their Beasts' Dinner

By Allison Levine, Foodable Contributor

Just over a year ago, Bloomberg News wrote a story about how women are “everywhere in food empires but no head chefs.” The story went on to explain that “men overwhelmingly hold the highest paying and most prominent kitchen jobs at ambitious, independent restaurants across America. Women occupy just 6.3 percent or 10 out of 160 head chef positions at 15 prominent U.S. restaurant groups analyzed by Bloomberg.”  Even though women make up 35-45% of graduates at two of the country’s most prestigious cooking schools, there are still a “larger percentage of women chief executive officers than head chefs.” And, according to a New York Magazine Article (March 28, 2014) “since their inception about a quarter-century ago, only 12 percent of the winners of the James Beard award for Outstanding Chef and 16 percent of Food & Wine’s Best New Chefs have been women.”

The restaurant industry, as a whole, may be a male-dominated industry and the statistics may not seem very hopeful. But there are many women today who are receiving critical accolades as they head their own restaurants.  At the 8th Annual Pebble Beach Food and Wine event, a dinner was dedicated to five top female chefs. And, to make it even more fun, these five women prepared a dinner that was a tribute to whole animal cuisine, “proving that a woman’s place is wherever she can wield a cleaver.”

Meat Lovers Unite at Pebble Beach's Meatopia

Meat Lovers Unite at Pebble Beach's Meatopia

By Allison Levine, Foodable Contributor

As a meat eater, when you see a description for an event that says, “If you are vegan, stop reading this now – this is not for you,” your eyes will light up. What is better than an event that celebrates all things meat? Nothing. Welcome to Meatopia.

Meatopia is the brainchild of award-winning writer and Esquire’s Editor-at-Large Josh Ozersky. An annual event that was created ten years ago in New York, Ozersky brought Meatopia to Pebble Beach Food and Wine festival this year for an informal evening on the beach.

The rules of Meatopia are simple. Representing every kind of animal, the meat used is meat that we can all feel good about - certified cruelty-free, hormone-free, and antibiotic-free meat. These are animals that have lived well and died respectfully. And, as an all-natural event, the chefs can use wood logs, chunks or lump hardwood charcoal as their only cooking fuels (no gas, electricity or propane is allowed). The chefs are also encouraged to celebrate the entire animal.

Vegas has a way of outdoing itself. When the city does something, they do it big. And once it’s done big, it needs to be done bigger. Buffets were only the beginning. It’s the city most celebrity chefs put stake into with hyped-up restaurants seeping through a myriad of renowned hotels. Recently brought to light by Forbes, it seems we can now add food & beverage festivals to the list. Allegedly, there are currently six food and drink-related festivals scheduled in just the next month. And, just in typical Las Vegas style, they are going all out. Read More
