Online reviews can be a valuable source of information, both to consumers and restaurants. But a flood of fake reviews has led to a crackdown, perhaps the first of its kind in the UK.
The crackdown, led by the Competition and Markets Authority, seeks to remove some 800 fake reviews already posted online, as well as prevent future fake posts.
“Fake reviews can lead to people making the wrong decisions and fair-playing businesses losing out," Nisha Arora, senior director of the Competition and Markets Authority told the International Business Times. "Search engine optimization companies, PR and marketing agencies provide a valuable service to businesses, but they must do this lawfully.
