The DC dining scene is made up of established restaurants with a loyal following. That’s why it’s not common for new names to show up on the Foodable’s top 25 DC restaurants list. This ranking is entirely made of veteran restaurants, meaning they have already appeared on Foodable’s list– some more so than others.
The top three restaurants all have made their appearance on the list several times. But they all made a major climb to the top.
Bad Saint, the no.1 restaurant is known for its Filipino dishes and cocktails and it opened in 2015. Since then it’s been well-received. The only negative–“bad news about Bad Saint: The Columbia Heights restaurant doesn’t take reservations for its 24 seats, meaning diners have to get in line early for the chance to explore the Filipino menu by chef Tom Cunanan,” wrote The Washington Post. Although the space is small, chef Cunanan’s flavors are big and bold.
The no. 2 restaurant is Proof, known for New American small plates and a massive wine list, jumps from no. 10 in the last ranking. Iron Gate makes a major climb from no. 12 and rounds out the top three. This Mediterranean restaurant offers Italian and Greek small plates and a tasting menu.
Even though no newbies made their way on the list, three restaurants return on the list after a brief hiatus. Foodable welcomes back Volt at no. 22, Cork Wine Bar at no. 23 and Estadio at no. 24.
